You Are Here is seeking Expressions of Interest from the community to be considered for a position on the You Are Here Board.

For folks with time and energy to spare, who want to make a valuable contribution to the arts in Canberra, being on the Board of YAH is a deeply rewarding and enjoyable experience.

We’re looking for people who love art and are passionate about good governance. We are looking for do-ers, whose values align with ours, who are dedicated and keen, with some specific areas of expertise, which are outlined below.

If that’s you, we’d love to hear from you.

YAH is committed to diversity and all interested individuals are welcome to apply. We especially encourage BIPOC, LGBTIQA+ people, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and people with lived experience of disability and neurodiversity to get in touch.

Interested applicants are encouraged to attend the YAH Gala(h) fundraising event on Saturday, 1 March, 2025, especially if you don’t have a prior connection with with YAH. It will be a great opportunity to learn more about the organisation, meet the board, staff, and some of the artists we support.

All board positions are volunteer roles. Applications are currently open and will close on 7 March 2025. New members will be appointed to the Board at the beginning of April 2025.

More Info

You Are Here (YAH) is an arts organisation that has been serving Canberra’s independent arts sector for 15 years. We are an incorporated, not-for-profit company.

YAH is committed to supporting artists in developing their practice, creating connections and fostering critical community.

Previously operating within an annual festival format, YAH has evolved to provide long-term creative development mentorship through its successful and highly regarded Cahoots programs, and produces smaller one-off events and activities in collaboration with independent artists and producers year-round.

YAH is constantly becoming, never finished or polished, enthusiastically experimental, open and alive to the possibilities present in failure. Deeply embedded within the community, YAH aims to nurture the development and sustainable careers of Canberra artists, makers, and dreamers.

YAH currently has 5 Board members, some of whom will be stepping down in the next little while, and we are looking to fill 4 positions with people who bring experience, vision, energy and strategic leadership to help shape the future of the organisation.

Experience on a not-for-profit Board is desirable, but not required. People working in professions other than the arts are strongly encouraged to apply.

Of particular interest are individuals with experience and confidence in:

  • Philanthropy & Fundraising
  • Arts Law & Intellectual Property
  • Governance
  • Treasury & Finance
  • Accessibility, Safer Spaces & Inclusion

If there are other skills you could contribute which you think would be valuable on our board, we’d love to hear about them!

Some qualities we’re looking for in our Board members:

  • Able to commit to the organisation for at least 2-3 years
  • Curious, kind and community minded
  • Understand and value the important role arts and culture plays in our community
  • Ideally, applicants will be based in the ACT; however, the call out is nation-wide for the right people.
  • An understanding of the specific needs of the Canberra arts ecology is desirable.

Board positions are voluntary.

Board members will be expected to:

Meet 6 times a year either in person or via Zoom. We talk about how YAH’s programs are going, any help the producers need, finances, and scheme dreams and plans for YAH’s bright future

Help with additional tasks as required, for example assisting with funding applications, acquittals and fundraising activities and ideas, sharing events and opportunities with your networks.

Be a champion for the organisation and communicate YAH’s activities to their community. This might mean showing up to events, giving feedback on work-in-development, letting your networks know about what YAH is up to.

Steward the vision, values and activities of the organisation. Which means, you will keep the staff accountable, and help guide them to make sound decisions based on YAH values

Commit to the legal and governance responsibilities associated with being a Board member. If you don’t know exactly what that means for an incorporated organisation, we can help you learn!

We have a strong focus on lowering barriers to entry for artists and audiences to participate in the arts, and the same goes for our Board selection process. We aim to make it simple to apply, and engage in a dialogue where you get to ask us as many questions as we do you. Let’s get to know each other and make sure it’s going to be a good fit for everyone!

If you are interested in applying for a position on the YAH Board, please submit an EOI by 7 March 2025.

In your EOI, tell us….
